In the Mumbai civic body, whose annual budget is over Rs 74, 400 crore, elections were held after a four-year delay. These were the first BMC polls since the 2022 split in the Shiv Sena when Eknath Shinde, now Deputy Chief Minister, broke away with a majority of the partys MLAs and allied with the BJP to become the chief minister. The undivided Shiv Sena held sway over Indias richest civic body for 25 years (1997-2022). Early trends from the ongoing vote counting in the Mumbai civic body indicate that the BJP–Shiv Sena Mahayuti alliance is leading in 93 wards. The Shiv Sena (UBT)–MNS alliance is trailing with 57 leads, of which Shiv Sena (UBT) is ahead in 48 wards, MNS in 8 wards, and NCP–SP in 1 ward. The Congress is leading in 10 wards, while Ajit Pawars NCP faction is also registering early leads, according to preliminary data from the counting process.
