Coronation street star Sheila Bernette dies as tributes flood in

A well-known Coronation Street actress has died at the age of 94, it has been announced. Sheila Bernette, the Corrie and Good Old Days star was known for her roles in the ITV soap and the BBC variety show and starred alongside the likes of Sir David Jason, Morecambe and Wise and Tommy Cooper. Sheila played Sister Delaney in the ITV soap in the 1970s, whilst she also appeared in the BBC variety show Good Old Days between 1968 and 1983. A statement, shared by the Royal Variety Charity, paid tribute to Sheila. It read: "Sheila will be very much missed by many of those who worked with her and those from the wider theatrical family," reports the Mirror . She was born Sheila Poncini and during her illustrious career, she worked with David Jason, comedians Morecambe and Wise as well as Dick Emery, Leslie Crowther and Tommy Cooper. She also appeared in the UK version of Candid Camera and starred in CBB children's show Hotel Trubble. She had a number of film roles including Three For All, Car Trouble and Driving Aphrodite. Actor and friend Peter Kosta said: "I was looking for digs, and Sheila said: 'Well, if you’re clean, I have a spare room in my house.' She always supported me in everything that I wanted to do, and always came to see me in everything I did, whenever she could. I have extremely fond memories of her." He recalled how he had seen her shortly before her death, sharing: "I saw her for nearly two hours, and we were talking about the good old days." He also said she was "very funny" and "very feisty". Later generations may remember her best for her role on CBBC show Hotel Trubble, where she starred as Mrs Poshington - a hotel guest who never leaves - between 2008 and 2011. Her final film role was in 2009 in Driving Aphrodite.
